On 20th April, 1915, the 3rd Royal Fusiliers battalion of 85 Brigade, 28th Division, moved into the Gravenstafel trenches in the northern part of the Ypres salient, on the left of 28th Division’s line. Although the battalion diary makes no mention of any casualties, this was two days before the first German gas attack and the German artillery had increased their bombardment of the British lines here. James Woodward was killed on 22nd April, probably as a result of this shell fire.
